The
CD-ROM acronym for Compact
Disc Read Only Memory is a
type of compact disks used
in computer science for software distribution. It is therefore a type of computer memory. More specifically it is a type of mass storage read-only.
The CD-ROM was the
second practical application and
implemented for the compact disc was developed jointly by
Sony to Philips. Provide a maximum storage
capacity of over 650 MB, were released in 1985 the year in which they were sold the
first Compact Disc and are collected in the
so-called Yellow Book.
The Yellow Book was created as an extension of the Red Book, the
first practical application of specific techniques implemented
for the CD, Audio CD, introduced in 1980.The
Yellow Book is available
free of charge. However, since the CD-ROM also an ISO
/ IEC (ISO / IEC 10149) and ECMA
(ECMA-130), its specifications are
freely available.
With
the birth of the World Wide Web in
1991, offering multimedia content
and the subsequent huge success of the Internet, the market-based multimedia
Compact Disc in a few years has undergone a drastic downsizing. Various media
that were previously sold on CD-ROMs were in fact
made available for free online as a Web application, others have been made available for a fee, as a Web application or as downloadable software, but with the advantage
of being available on-line at any time
without the need of having to go
into a store to purchase a CD-ROM.
